Creating Translation Memories

Creating Translation Memories

In  termbase.io , it is possible to create translation memories from scratch. To begin, a translation memory (TM) must first be created and properly configured. Once the TM is set up, it will automatically generate translation memory units each time a job associated with the TM is completed.

Creating a TM from scratch

Navigate to Resources on the main menu bar to display the options.
    Select the option Translation Memories.
Click on "+Add translation memory" located at the upper left corner.
On the pop-up menu configure the following options:
  • Specify a name for your TM.
  • Give a short description for your if needed.
  • Select source and target language: every job with the same language combination associated to the translation memory will update the translation units when marked as Finished.
  • Select a segmentation rule set if needed or leave it as standard.

  • Share the TM with your team(s) if needed. When a TM is shared within a team, members may have access to it based on their role. Depending on their permissions, they may be able to view, use, or modify the TM.
  • Connect to Modern MT. If a Modern MT account is used as the translation engine, it can be connected to translation memories. This improves machine translation quality in real time, as the system learns from previous translations and adapts to individual preferences.

  • Click on "Save" to finish.

Populating and Updating the Translation Memory

A TM starts out empty when it is first created. To populate it, a translation job must be linked to the TM.
Multiple jobs can be linked to the same TM, allowing it to gradually accumulate translation units from different projects.
When a linked job is completed, pressing Finish Job stores all segments from that job into the TM.
If any changes are later made to a previously finished job, pressing Actualize TM updates the TM with the latest versions of those segments, ensuring the TM remains accurate and up to date.

How to Link a Job to a TM

A job can be linked to a TM in the configuration window shown during job creation. A detailed guide on how to create jobs is available here:  Creating Translation Jobs
For jobs that have already been created, the configuration settings can be edited to link the TM. A detailed guide on how to edit job configuration is available here:  How to Edit a Job
